A Bit Haywire
2008 Sketchbook and other fine products
Wednesday, July 16, 2008
This year I’m going to be offering a sketchbook for the first time. I spent a lot of time looking for sketches that showed a range of what I do, and I think I found a good sampling. There’s some of the sketch card stuff you’ve seen, and a lot of drawings I’ve never put on the site. I’m looking forward to getting some feedback on it, as I’ve never put my stuff into book form before.
I’ll be selling them next week at the Comic Con in San Diego. I’ll be at the Viper booth, 1903 with both the sketchbook and the limited convention edition of Wonderdog, Inc, not due in stores until November!
I have 50 sketchbooks and 40 copies of Wondy, so make sure to get yours early! I’ll also be signing copies of Haywire and Sasquatch, as well as whatever else you might find. In addition, I’ll be taking commissions for the first time this year. I’m bringing some blank sketch cards and will be offering commissions for $10. Hope to see you guys there!
CAPE & Mine all Mine
Monday, April 28, 2008
Press release from David Hopkins:
CAPE, the world’s largest Free Comic Book Day
event, is this weekend Saturday May 3rd at Craddock Park in Dallas,
Texas. In addition to the important and cool people—Mark Waid, Gail
Simone, Robert Kirkman, Greg Pak, David Mack, Daniel Way, Scott Kurtz,
Jim Mahfood, Dave Crosland, Joelle Jones, Jamie S. Rich, and Chynna
Clugston—I’m debuting my minicomic “Mine All Mine” with fierce
indie-integrity fully intact. It’s a collection of 16 one page
vignettes, all written by me, David Hopkins, and illustrated by
different artists. It’s a minicomic about the varied ways people steal
from others, covering everything from pickpocketing to e-mail scams to
gentrification. Seems appropriate on a day when we give comics away
for free. I’ll be selling mine for $2, thank you very much.
The contributors…
Samax Amen, Joshua Boulet, Ryan Cody, David DeGrand, Joe Eisma, Jake
Ekiss, Derrick Fish, Michael Lagocki, Jim Lujan, Paul Milligan, Wes
Molebash, Chad Sell, Cal Slayton, Justin Stewart, ZeeS, and Scott
Zirkel.
Cover by Tania Kaufmann, darling of the local Dallas art scene.
After CAPE, we’ll have it available at select stores on May 14th and
for sale online. For more information, you can visit David’s website.
I’ll be at CAPE with Pat Bussey and Josh Howard signing this, Haywire and whatever else is requested.
Wii!
Monday, December 10, 2007
So we got a Wii for the kids for Christmas! We got pretty lucky, my wife just walked into a Wal-Mart and they were unloading them, so she grabbed one. Since it’s for the kids for Christmas, we haven’t been able to hook it up to the TV… in the living room. But every night, after they’re in bed, we get it out and Wii it up. Wow, that’s a really awkward sentence. Anyway, it’s a blast to play, and all we’ve got so far is the sports game that came with it. What’s really cool, is after playing for about an hour, I’m pretty sore. I get pretty caught up in tennis. And I don’t really even like tennis.
I’m anxious to get into some other types of games, Metroid of course, some of the first person shooters look cool. How bout you? What do you recommend?
Update on the book front. Court and I are pinning down the story for Haywire 2. The first chapter of Wonderdog, Inc is done art-wise and I’m lettering it now. There are four chapters total, and I think we’re on schedule for this summer. Hopefully we’ll have it for San Diego.
Wizard World Texas
Wednesday, November 14, 2007
Looks like I won’t be able to make it this year. Which really sucks, I’ve been at the last three or four and I hate to miss out on hanging with all my friends, but finances are tight right now and I really can’t justify the gas up there and back. Oh well, maybe next year.
There will still be plenty of copies of Haywire at Viper’s booth, so be sure to stop by and pick one up. If you’re lucky Pat Bussey will be there and he’ll sign it for you. Not that he actually did anything for the book, it’d still be a fun time for all.
Updates shmupdates

Works been kicking my buttocks lately, so no new drawings. Work on Wonderdog is going great, the first chapter is complete and we seem to be on target for getting it out for next years Comic Con.
Speaking of cons, I’ll be at Wizard World Texas next weekend signing at the Viper booth. Come out and say hi if you feel so inclined, we should have copies of Haywire and Sasquatch at our disposal.
In sadder news, I’ve been removed from IMDB. I used to have a credit for being a Rough Rider (uncredited) in the TV movie Rough Riders. Apparently the new rule is you have to have at least one credited appearance before they’ll uncredit you. I’ve been on there since 2003, shouldn’t I be grandfathered in or something?
Comic-Con 2007
Thursday, July 12, 2007
It’s that time of the year again! If anyone is going to be in San Diego, come by and say hi! I’ll be at the Viper booth, 1903, most of the time and we’ll have plenty of copies of Haywire and Sasquatch for sell. Court will be there too, though most of his time will be at the Penny Farthing booth. This will be the first place you’ll be able to get both of us to sign at the same time for both books.
So I’m not always perfect…

Ok, so somehow I managed to wipe out the entire Haywire site. I was in the Dreamhost panel and I was deleting the forums with their uninstall tools. Somehow the tool went ahead and deleted the entire site. And of course Dreamhost has no back up. I did all of the updates via ssh and vi which means I have none of the pages saved anywhere. So, as of now, the Haywire site is no longer with Dreamhost. I have moved it here to the office servers where I can have complete control over everything. I’ll be moving this site as well as the soon to be updated Wonderdog, Inc here as well. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a while, just never had the time. Now, apparently, is that time.
I’ve tried to replace most of the content I can remember, if I’m missing something somewhere, an interview, a review, please let me know and I’ll add it right away.
Book Signing
Monday, February 12, 2007
I’ll be at Hasting’s in Kerrville this Saturday from 2-4 with copies of Haywire ready to sign. Everybody in the hill country come out and see me!
