For the non-technical, this will be a boring post that you have my permission to skip.
A few years ago I took the initiative to write my own blogging software. In just a few short days I was able to create 90% of what I wanted. I had always planned on going back to the code to update and add new features, but of course, I never did.
Until now.
I scrapped my own application and looked into a pre-built one that might suit my needs a bit better. I tried the old stand by, WordPress, but after looking at it closer, I found I really didn’t like the database architecture. I looked at a few more and finally came up with Expression Engine. I had known about EE for a few years and I had even built my blog out of Ellis Lab’s Code Igniter framework, so I knew the company was good. But I had never used EE before, so I wasn’t sure if it would handle what I needed.
I looked and it didn’t exactly do what I wanted it too. At first glance I thought it was far too simple, but after getting in and playing with the nuts and bolts, I found that you could get it to do pretty much whatever you wanted. So I did. My recommendation to anyone out there worrying about the price tag, it’s worth it, however, I was able to get by with just the Core. And since this is a non-profit, it fit their requirements nicely. If I want to beef it up more, I won’t hesitate to pay for the rest of the features.
About the design, I wanted something a bit darker in color with more texture. I like the color scheme, but I think I want to add even more texture. What do you think? You can use the all new comment section to let me know!
